Cared for, in your own time.

Wigs, toppers and headwear for people experiencing treatment-related hair loss, alopecia and other longer-term change. The atelier provides cosmetic hair care alongside—not in place of—your clinical team.

There is no single right moment.

Some people want to plan before treatment begins; others prefer to wait. Sarah can work with the timing that feels manageable and with the information your clinical team has given you.

Before treatment

If you think you may want a wig, meeting before significant hair loss can make it easier to reference your current colour, style and density. It can also give you time to become familiar with the piece.

During change

A changing or sensitive scalp may affect weight, lining, fit and how long a piece feels comfortable. Wigs, partial pieces and headwear can be compared without pressure to choose immediately.

Later or through regrowth

Your needs may change during and after treatment. Fit, styling and whether you still want a piece can be reviewed at your pace; questions about hair regrowth belong with your clinical team.

A wig is one option, not an obligation.

Wigs

Ready-made, customised and fully bespoke routes can be considered according to timing, fit, appearance, care and budget.

Toppers & partial pieces

Where hair loss is partial and suitable hair remains, a smaller piece may provide targeted coverage without a full wig.

Headwear

Soft caps, scarves and turbans can offer warmth, comfort and choice at home, during treatment or on days when a wig is not wanted.

Sarah will explain what each option asks of the scalp, the wearer and the home-care routine. You can choose more than one approach for different settings.

Different questions belong with different people.

Sarah can help with cosmetic options, fitting, personalisation, securing, styling and care for the piece. She does not diagnose hair-loss conditions, advise on cancer treatment or predict regrowth.

Ask your nurse or consultant about

Whether your treatment is likely to cause thinning or hair loss, whether scalp cooling is suitable, and how your hospital handles referrals, wig vouchers or financial support.

Tell Sarah about

The timing your team has given you, any scalp sensitivity relevant to fitting, and what you want the piece or headwear to help you do day to day. Detailed medical records are not required.

If the scalp becomes sore or changes

Pause and seek advice from your treatment team. A wig fitting should never delay clinical assessment of a symptom or side effect.

Practical, one-to-one and paced around you.

Bring what helps

A photograph of your usual hair, a current piece, headwear you already use, or questions written down. None of these is required.

Bring someone if you wish

A partner, parent, friend or member of your medical team is welcome to attend.

Take time afterwards

You leave with the relevant options and pricing. Nothing needs to be decided on the day.

A one-hour consultation at the Matlock atelier costs £120.

Before, during and after treatment.

Do I need to wait until my hair begins to fall out?

No. If you think you may want a wig, meeting beforehand can help Sarah reference your current colour and style. It is also completely reasonable to wait until you feel ready.

Can Sarah advise me about scalp cooling?

No. Scalp cooling is a clinical decision that depends on the treatment you are receiving. Ask your chemotherapy nurse or consultant whether it is suitable and available.

Can you handle an NHS wig voucher?

Voucher and referral arrangements differ between hospitals and can change. Ask your specialist nurse or hospital team how their process works, then contact the atelier with the documents or instructions they provide.

What if my scalp feels sore or sensitive?

Tell your clinical team about soreness, irritation or other changes. Sarah can consider comfort and fit only after clinical concerns have been addressed.

Can I bring a member of my medical team?

Yes. A partner, friend, family member or member of your medical team is welcome.

Will I need to share my full medical history?

No. Detailed medical records are not required. Share only the minimum information needed to understand timing, comfort and the cosmetic hair-care request.

Support beyond the atelier.

Macmillan Cancer Support provides detailed information about treatment-related hair loss, choosing and caring for wigs, headwear and scalp care.
