NHS wigs in England: charges, referrals and buying privately

Information about NHS wigs is often shared as if everyone receives the same voucher or a free wig. In England, the position is more specific.

Wigs supplied through the NHS may carry a standard charge unless the patient qualifies for help with health costs. The hospital or treating team also has its own referral process. A private supplier cannot decide that a person is entitled to NHS funding without the appropriate hospital documentation.

The NHS Business Services Authority currently lists:

• stock modacrylic wig: £80.15;
• partial human-hair wig: £212.35;
• full made-to-order human-hair wig: £310.55.

These are NHS charges, not Sarah Afiovana Hair Couture’s retail prices. A hospital scheme may work differently, and some services offer a contribution or voucher towards a wider choice. Ask the team making the referral what is included and whether you must pay any difference.

NHS wigs and fabric supports can be free for specified groups, including some children and young people, hospital inpatients, people with qualifying certificates or benefits, and those entitled through the NHS Low Income Scheme. An HC3 certificate may provide partial help.

Eligibility rules contain detail that cannot be safely summarised as “cancer patients receive a free wig”. Check the current NHSBSA page or ask the hospital’s patient-support team.

If treatment is expected to cause hair loss, ask your chemotherapy nurse, clinical nurse specialist, radiographer or support team about the local wig service. Hospitals may use a referral, voucher or appliance form and may have named approved suppliers.

Do this early when possible. Choosing before hair loss can make colour and style matching easier and leaves time for ordering and fitting. Bring the completed paperwork to the supplier and check whether it must be authorised before an appointment.

If you are receiving care through Chesterfield Royal Hospital or University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, ask your own team about the arrangements they currently use. Do not rely on a process described by a different NHS trust.

Referral and voucher arrangements vary by hospital. Contact the atelier with the name of the referring service and the paperwork you have so the next step — and whether that route can be accepted — can be checked accurately.

You may choose to buy privately if the NHS range, timescale or specification does not meet your needs. You may also decide to keep an NHS wig as a spare and commission another piece for different circumstances. That is a personal decision, not a requirement.

A supplier should explain which costs are covered, what any NHS contribution means and what you would pay before an order is placed.

VAT relief may apply to eligible wigs and hairpieces supplied because of hair loss resulting from illness, medical treatment or a qualifying disability. It is not a general discount on every wig.

The supplier is responsible for checking that the goods and circumstances qualify. The customer normally completes a declaration at the time of purchase. Do not assume tax can be reclaimed later if the transaction was not handled correctly.
